Wireless for machinery

For the wireless technologies agricultural and construction equipments represent an interesting application domain. For this complex and highly specialized machinery through the wireless it is possible to simplify the electronic architecture.

The design of heavy vehicles for agriculture like tractors and combines is based on very complex electric and electronic architectures. This approach is due to the need of interconnecting a large number of devices and electronic control units that today enable a precise control of vehicle’s hydraulic plugs. Moreover, the hitched implements receive and transmit data to the tractor to achieve the so-called “precision farming”. The number of on-board busses, higher than on a common car, implies a massive wiring that limits the configuration opportunities. A possible solution for these design constraints is given by the short range wireless technologies, that – if applied to peripheral or optional components – allow to simplify the architecture.

In general, these technologies can introduce new functionalities: the remote control of lifts and hydraulic plugs will facilitate the hitching operations while the operator is not on board.
