TARGET FLUFF project

The Decree on Concession of the Target Fluff project, the final deed that marked the start of the first project of all the initiatives of the Industria 2015 – Energy Efficiency Bill promoted by the Ministry of Economic Development, was signed at CRF in the second half  of 2009. In addition to CRF, main proponent, the project involves Fiat Group Automobiles, as supervisor, and another three industrial partners: FERALPI Siderurgica of Lonato (Brescia), the Centro Recupero e Servizi of Leinì (Turin) and the Centro Rottami of Cisterna of Latina (Latina). The main aim of the Target Fluff project is to develop a new industrial sector tied to recovery of energy from waste deriving from end-of-life vehicles and able to obtain the maximum possible energy yield from waste that is, for the most part, sent to disposal sites. For some time now, the industrial supply chain of end-of-life vehicles has been successfully recycling metal components (around 75% of the weight of the car) and various other materials (mainly plastic, rubber and glass equal in total to the remaining 25% of weight) but, at the end recycling, a residue known as ‘fluff’ remains that can no longer be used as ‘secondary’ raw material and which, at the moment, is sent almost entirely to disposal sites and for which the real environmental solution is energy recovery. The main strong point of the project is the experimentation and use of innovative pyrolysis and gasification technologies that promote maximum energy efficiency and economic sustainability with minimum environmental impact.
