Small Gasoline Engine CNG TC

According to the concept of ultra-downsizing, FPT has completed the pre-industrialisation of the 900 cc two-cylinder engine due to equip Fiat Group city cars. A bifuel (gasoline and natural gas) version is being developed alongside the naturally-aspirated and turbocharged gasoline versions. For Fiat, the two-cylinder engine (sold from 2010 with the name TwinAir) is the right response to the demand for high efficiency engines as:

  •  it adopts MultiAir system control of the intake valves, features high displacement in order to maximise thermo-dynamic efficiency, a minimum number of cylinders and, therefore, minimum organic losses;
  •  it has been designed according to the most up-to-date criteria for minimisation of internal friction. It is also an efficient, flexible, low cost engine as it has a limited number of components and an excellent size, weight and performance ratio, guaranteed by the turbocharged versions.
  •  Lastly, the CNG version will guarantee extremely low CO2 emissions and permit further reductions in the near future using natural gas-hydrogen mixes. This latter aspect is a breakthrough that will make the Small Gasoline Engine one of the reference points for future combustion engine power-plants as it combines driving pleasure, promoted by the turbo, with reduction of weight and dimensions (downsizing) via the 0.9L TC version, with fuel economy and reduced emissions guaranteed by natural gas-hydrogen mixes (a mix with 30% hydrogen may promote a further 11% reduction in CO2 emissions).
