Further developments of natural gas/hydrogen mixes

As a further contribution to research into natural gas/hydrogen mixes, CRF’s Trento HQ of has cooperated with Iveco in constructing a hydro-natural gas EcoDaily as part of an experimental programme with the Brenner motorway (A22). This project represents a further step towards sustainable mobility as the hydrogen used for the mix is produced by the surplus energy of a hydro-electric power station located close to the city of Bolzano. The plant has a potential of 240 Nm3/h of hydrogen from renewable sources (green) sufficient to power more than 100 hydro-natural gas Iveco Daily’s and is part of a broader initiative for construction of the hydrogen motorway between Munich and Modena: a hydrogen (and natural gas) distributor will be set up every 100 km along this major motorway axis permitting refuelling in a 600-km long and 300-km wide corridor. With regard to fuel from renewable sources, the Trento HQ of CRF is also engaged in coordinating a systematic action for development of a ‘best practice’ directed towards development of the bio-natural gas supply chain and experimentation of this on vehicles. The initiative, located in the tourist area of the ‘Comunità Trentina del Primiero e Vanoi’ involves the Provincial Public Administration, the local multi-utility company (ACSM), companies and citizens according to an innovative model of participation considered essential to decree the success of the initiative. This can be considered a ‘landmark’ project of major impact that can be replicated subsequently in other contexts and which will lead to construction of an ‘oil free zone’, i.e. of a territory independent of fossil fuels. Mobility in this area will be managed using bio-natural gas produced from animal husbandry waste and the moist fraction of urban waste which, together with green hydrogen, will guarantee operation of a fleet of environment-friendly vehicles for passenger transport and for other services, managed according to new generation info-telematics technologies. A major systematic action that will contribute to achieving the European target of 10% of fuel from renewable sources by 2020.
