Cooperative safety: the PRE-DRIVE C2X project

PRE-DRIVE C2X is a European project co-financed by the European Commission Information Society and Media that is working on the development of cooperative systems for V2V and V2I communication. The PRE-DRIVE C2X project kicked off in July 2008 and is due to last for two years. The project, coordinated by Daimler A.G. and supported by EUCAR, envisages the participation of a large swathe of European auto-makers and other partners who are working together to define and implement a V2V and V2I communication architecture. This communication architecture is designed in such a way as to permit European level interoperability of the various applications for safe, efficient mobility and flexible integration of telematics applications according to the different types of vehicles and road infrastructures that will be constructed in the future. A first objective has been achieved through direct involvement of many European stakeholders in this activity, including Municipalities, Public Authorities and the main standardisation authority involved, ETSI TC ITS. CRF, in cooperation with Daimler, Volvo Technology and other partners of the PRE-DRIVE C2X project, is organizing specific meetings on the development of these issues, involving some of the most important stakeholders who will decree the orientation of future developments. The first workshop, held in June 2009, represented an important step forward towards future interoperability of the world of communications, oriented towards adoption of mobility applications. Following this first workshop, the European Commission is planning to coordinate cooperation between road operators and industry for the implementation of cooperative systems while, at the same time, the PRE-DRIVE C2X project is preparing to launch wide-scale experimentation of cooperative systems in Europe.
